Understanding the Myth

For years, schools, workplaces, and even families have used the word “normal” as the

gold standard. But here’s the truth: normal does not exist. It is a myth built from

stereotypes and expectations about how people should act, think, or look. When we

cling to this myth, we erase individuality and silence those who do not fit the mold.

Autistic students often feel the weight of this myth most intensely. They are told to

mask, to “sit still,” to “act like everyone else.” But pretending is not inclusion. It is

survival and it is exhausting.
